3D Resources

These are all resources that are currently used when creating our projects. There are a ton more out there, and eventually I’ll get them all in here!

Models

Artist-3D Really nice 3D model repository with lots of free resources.
Turbo Squid Some Free some not so free. Visit our little corner of the repository here.

Textures

CG Textures Absolutely awesome resource for textures and reference images. Apparently going through some reconstruction at the moment, but still fully functional.
Turbo Squid Some Free some not so free. Visit our little corner of the repository here.
Morgue Files Fantastic resource for reference images and some textures.
iStock Stock Site, a tried a true standard.
Fotolia Stock Site, little newer stock site.
SnapVillage Stock Site, just out of beta!

3D Software

MoI One of the coolest, best meshing NURBS modelers in town!
Blender Free, still checking this thing out, and it’s a pretty making for a most intriguing application for the arsenal.
DAZ Studio Free, and fun with Photoshop!
Cinema 4D Great all around performer, not the standard here in the US, but stands toe-to-toe with the other kids on the block.
Rhino 3D Absolutely positively the best 3D modeling program on the market (IMHO). My personal all time favorite, and have been a user since it’s inception (v0.x beta!). I must add as well that the support for Rhino is above and beyond anything I’ve ever dealt with in the years of use and I’ll need to expound a bit when I get around to blogging about Rhino’s virtues.
Lightwave Apparently Lightwave and me are going to become friends here very shortly. Hopefully a happy relationship, and I’ll most definitely include some info about it on the blog as work through it. They had a companion upgrade for half price, just couldn’t pass it up. Also got to see it in action over at one of the local production companies we occasionally farm work out to, and coupled with a plugin called FPrime, I was impressed.

2D Software

The Gimp The free version of "almost" Photoshop. We don’t really use it, but it’s a great alternative if your on a tight budget.
Photoshop The standard in image editing.
Illustrator The standard in vector drawing.
Inkscape The free version of "almost" Illustrator. Another one we don’t use, but another great alternative for the budget conscious.

Forums/General

CG Society If it’s 3D related, they’ve probably got a forum for it and a personal favorite.
RetouchPro Specifically for retouchers (photography), but since we do that, and a lot of the techniques leach over in to texture creation it’s included here.
Texas Photo Forums Another photography site (hey it’s what we do as well), included since we use photography for all aspects of our projects, from composite elements to textures.
