About

Renderology is a aimed as a general 3D resource and a means to journal projects and work-flow of 3D and 2D (or the combination of the two) in the creation of imagery and/or animation for commercial and/or personal artwork.

The history of Renderology is a bit long and fraught with peril. Originally conceived in 1999 and first put on the web in 2000, it was originally a site centered on 3D modeling with tools such as Ray Dream and POV. Additionally “Terrain Forge” was developed and distributed from the site, which was a personally developed height field generator that used a gray-scale images to produce a nice little 3d height-field. Terrain Forge went away as most decent 3D modeling application had finally put in the ability to do exactly what it did, without leaving the UI…so it just kinda faded away as life became busier and time for development disappeared.

A lot has changed since the inception. Resources on the web have actually become better (if you know where to look), and even with all that…my biggest complaint still is that with the lessons learned over the last 15+ years of working with 3D modeling/animation and 2D “stuff” finding places that get into the blending of both parts are few and far between. As a journal my hope as well is to keep some sort of record of techniques used for future reference, since over the years I’ve forgotten more techniques that I care to think about. Additionally, techniques evolve…work flow and patterns change, and most importantly after doing this for so long, there are a bunch of ways to “skin a cat”.

Anyway, hopefully this little re-invention of Renderology this little blog will serve as a helpful resource in whole or in part to someone somewhere, and at the very least either document the trials and tribulations of 3D development as well provide a laugh or two in years to come.  At least that is my hope.
